Many of the varieties we carry are excellent for cooking as well as decorating.

Popular cooking varieties include Butternut, Carnival, Hubbard, Jarrahdale, Fairytale, Cushaw, Flat White Boer, Turk’s Turban, and Pie Pumpkins.

Depending on the variety, they can be used for soups, pies, baking, roasting, stuffing, and other fall dishes.

A few favorites include:

Jarrahdale — A slate blue-grey variety with golden-orange flesh. It keeps well and is especially good baked or used in soups.

Fairytale — Also known as Musquée de Provence, this French variety has thick orange flesh, a mildly sweet flavor, and stores well.

Butternut Squash — A classic winter squash with smooth, sweet orange flesh that is excellent baked, roasted, steamed, or used in soups and pies.

Hubbard Squash — A traditional winter squash with yellow flesh that works well for baking, pies, and soups. It is one of Kate’s favorites for homemade soup.

Green-Striped Cushaw — An old-fashioned variety traditionally used for pies and also good mashed or made into squash pancakes.

Flat White Boer — A distinctive white pumpkin with sweet orange flesh that is excellent baked or used in pies.

We’ll be adding some of Kate’s favorite pumpkin and squash recipes and cooking ideas as the season progresses.
